Muscle Preactivation and Leg Stiffness in Men and Women during Hopping
نویسندگان
چکیده
When hopping, kleg increases as surface stiffness decreases (Farley et al., 1998). Adjustments to ankle stiffness were found to be the greatest contributor to changes in kleg, whereas the timing of muscle onset did not change. Hortobagyi and DeVita (2000), however, found significant relationships between muscle preactivition times and leg stiffness when subjects stepped downward. They also reported differences between young and old subjects.

Changes in muscle activity with increase in leg stiffness during hopping.
While the spring-like leg behavior of legs in mammalian locomotion has been well documented, its neural basis remains ambiguous. The purpose of the present study was to examine leg stiffness control during hopping. Seven male subjects performed in place two-legged hopping at their preferred frequency with two different contact times of the stance phase, preferred and short ones (PCT and SCT, re...

The authors compared leg stiffness (KVERT), muscle activation, and joint movement patterns between 11 men and 10 women during hopping. Physically active and healthy men and women performed continuous 2-legged hopping at their preferred rate and at 3.0 Hz. Compared with men, women demonstrated decreased KVERT; however, after the authors normalized for body mass, gender differences in KVERT were ...

Purpose: Core stability and leg stiffness are two determinant mechanisms in athletic performance and risk injury. This study aimed to investigate the gender differences and relationship of these two factors in athletes. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, core stability and leg stiffness of 12 male and 12 female Iranian squash players at national level were examined utilizing McGill’...

Stiffness is an index for determination of elastic properties of body and its optimum range is different in various motion patterns. The Spring-mass model is used for calculating stiffness. In this method, the whole leg is modeled with a linear simple spring. The aim of this study is determination of lower body stiffness and evaluation of its correlation with agility, as dominant motion patt...

When humans hop or run on different surfaces, they adjust their effective leg stiffness to offset changes in surface stiffness. As a result, the overall stiffness of the leg-surface series combination remains independent of surface stiffness. The purpose of this study was to determine whether humans make a similar adjustment when springs are placed in parallel with the leg via a lower limb orth...
